A FEW MO' THINGS, 10/30/12
California high school football looks fun....

This morning, I attended the 2012-'13 Coaches v. Cancer Tipoff Breakfast.  Two things resulted from this...

1) I'm even more geeked for college hoops.

2)  I'm way behind.

(Shannon Russell did a nice job recapping the event)

So just some random thoughts...

-I went to the UC/Grand Valley State exhibition last night.  I am normal, thus I use common sense, and thus I will refrain from reaching any sweeping conclusions about how the Bearcats will do this season, though I do think they will be quite good, but I think we're gonna like watching this team.  They're fun to watch, they'll force some tempo, and I think we'll see the best chemistry among Mick's seven UC teams.

What does that say about how many games they win or how far they advance?  Nothing.  But these guys will at the very worst, be aesthetically pleasing and more than mildly entertaining.

-The NBA season starts tonight.  Does Miami play the Lakers or the Thunder for the title?  That's the storyline.  Everything else fades into the background.  Yes, Boston is a legit challenger to the Heat, adding enough players to field two legit starting fives with an extra guy leftover.  Yes, the Eastern Conference will be fun to watch.  And sure, how Anthony Davis affects the Hornets, how actually having fans (at least for a few games) affects the Nets, how the Pacers try to sneak up on people again, how many Knicks end up getting joints replaced by the end of the season, how midway through the season people will pay attention to how much Dion Waiters has improved the Cavs, and where the Bulls are wehn Derrick Rose comes back and how his return affects the East, will all be worth following....

...but is anything in the league right now a bigger story than wha Miami does for an encore?  With LeBron adding what's being called an unstoppable post game, is there anything a team can do short of clubbing him in the knees to stop him?  And with a healthier Wade, the addition of Ray Allen, and LeBron's improvements, is there anything that suggests a repeat isn't an inevitability?

No.

The Heat are going to win.  They'll beat either LA or OKC.  The time between now and then will have some intrigue and there will be a few hundred entertaining, but ultimately meaningless games.  Miami's reign is just beginning.

Oh, and my Knicks will go 43-39, finish seventh in the East, and lose in round one.

-Sorry this was late and brief.  Catch the radio show today at 3:04 on ESPN1530. We've finally found a school excited about a win over Kentucky in football....
