Plus, the #MoEggerTQD and our search for new, wacky radio names.  We're on at 3:04 on ESPN1530.  Know how I've been arguing that the 2-3 LDS format is better?  Historically, it had been.

From reader Sean....

Mo,

I had forgotten that when the Wild Card started in 1995, the first round was played with the 2-3 format, where the better seed went on the road for 2, followed by 3 at home.  In fact, this happened from 1995-1997, so it is not really unprecedented to do it this year.

I wanted to research how the better seeded teams fared each of these years in the Divisional Series to see if it is really as big of a disadvantage as people make it out to be.  Keep in mind, when there was only 1 Wild Card team, the #1 seed could not play the Wild Card team if they came from the same division, therefore, you sometimes had the #1 seed play the #3 team & the #2 seed play the #4 seed, so those seeding were even closer.

In 1995, all 4 of the better seeded teams won (including the Reds) the divisional series
In 1996, 2 of the 4 better seeds won
In 1997, 3 of the 4 better seeds won.

That gives us a total of 9 of the 12 better seeded teams having won the divisional round under this format, which is 75%.

From 1998-2011 , baseball has employed the 2-2-1 divisional series format.  Here are the numbers for that:
1998-3 of 4 better seeded teams won.
1999-2 of 4
2000-1 of 4
2001-3 of 4
2002-0 of 4
2003-1 of 4
2004-2 of 4
2005-3 of 4
2006-1 of 4
2007-3 of 4
2008-2 of 4
2009-4 of 4
2010-2 of 4
2011-1 of 4
This gives us 29 of 56 better seeded teams having won the divisional round under this format, which is 52%

That is a big difference between the 75% and 52%.  With numbers like these, it might be good for the Reds that baseball is using the 2-3 format this year.

Thank you -

Sean.
