I’m hearing now that Rolen wants to play.
That tells me the issue may be money. The Reds are at or above their budget for payroll. The Reds obviously can’t pay Rolen what he made last year ($6.5 million). How much can they pay? I have no idea. But given the way they’ve deferred money, the budget is tight.

The Cincinnati Reds made one of the most provocative moves of the Major League Baseball offseason without spending a dime or cracking the cover of a Scott Boras promotional binder. After an extensive internal debate in October, they decreed that Aroldis Chapman will move from the back end of the bullpen to the starting rotation, where they hope he will blossom into must-see viewing in installments of six innings or more.

Will the move work? As a reliever, Chapman could just rear back and fire his 100-mph heater past helpless hitters. He threw his fastball 88 percent of the time last year, mixing in a slider. Some will say he'll need to add a third pitcher, but that's not necessarily true if he can command his fastball. The obvious comparison is Randy Johnson, who made a pretty good living as a fastball/slider guy.

Double Standard
I was watching MLB Network Hot Stove yesterday and though baseball writer Ken Rosenthal made an interesting comment. He said he's disappointed by the lack of media scrutiny and coverage of drug/PED violations when it comes to NFL players compared to MLB players. He went on to discuss the double standard he sees. Do you agree? If so, why? I'll spend some time on this Thursday night.

For a moment, Justin Jackson disappeared. Not theoretically, as in from the offensive rhythm or from the rotation. Rather, from view. Of most everyone.
In a second attempt to improbably save a ball off a rebound, he ended up somewhere between the visitor's locker room in the basement and Nippert Stadium.
As his teammates recovered to retain a valuable possession late in the 64-56 victory against Rutgers on Wednesday night Jackson finally emerged, trotting out from deep behind the stands with a smile stretching ear to ear.

Xavier dominates glass, hangs on late

While Dayton's starting lineup was introduced Wednesday night, Xavier students held up full-color pictures of all six of those United States Presidents. At tip-off, they chanted "Jimmy Carter."
Thanks to a huge rebounding edge and a little luck late, those Presidents will be back next year. By the wild end of what became a 66-61 Xavier victory, those students were off to party like it was 18 years before 1999.

With at least 12 games left in his college career (barring injury), Cooper is on pace to become the only player in the history of Division I college basketball to collect 2,000 points, 900 assists, 500 rebounds and 300 steals. On the surface, it seems to be a record that should've been reached at some point in the past 100 years. But no. Stop and think about those numbers, then realize Cooper is listed -- listed -- at 6 feet tall.
It's stupendous.

Wednesday, the league released news that Specht will be named the winner of the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award.
The prestigious award will be presented Friday morning at 9 a.m. in New Orleans.
