Bengals

Ouch

The Bengals today made the following roster moves:
            * Placed LB Thomas Howard on the Reserve/Injured list. Howard suffered a season-ending knee injury in practice yesterday. The seventh-year pro from Texas-El Paso was Cincinnati’s tackling leader last season (120), and he was again in the starting WLB role for 2012. In Week 1 at Baltimore, he logged four tackles with a sack, plus one pass defensed.
            * Signed free agent LB Roddrick Muckelroy, a third-year player from Texas. Muckelroy (6-2, 250) was with the Bengals in preseason, starting three games as an injury replacement and finishing second on the club in tackles (17), including a sack. He was a Bengals fourth-round draft choice in 2010. He played in 14 games in ’10, but missed all of last season due to an Achilles injury suffered in training camp.

Leake over Bailey in playoff rotation?
Listener Jeff brings up a couple of interesting points:
How big could the last couple of starts be for Homer Bailey and Mike Leake?
Homer Bailey has had three good starts in a row, two of the starts at GABP.
He pitched against Houston (2) Pittsburgh (1). He has always pitches well against those two teams, 11-2 with a 2.23 ERA in 19 career starts.
If the Reds playoff opponent is San Francisco:
The last two seasons Leake is 3-0 in 3 starts with a 0.77 ERA and a complete game.
Earlier this year Leake tossed a complete game, allowing 9 hits and 1 run to beat SF on June 29 in SF.
Bailey has a lifetime 5.59 ERA against the Giants in five starts.
Although, Bailey did go 6.1 IN, allowing 2 ER vs the Giants at GABP back on April 26.
You know how much Dusty likes to split his rotation. He could alternate hard and soft with Cueto, Arroyo, Latos and Leake.

MLB commissioner Bud Selig canceled the remainder of the baseball season.
The announcement came 34 days after a player's strike. There would be no World Series for the first time since 1904.
The Reds were 66-48 and leading the NL Central by a half game over Houston.
The Montreal Expos owned the best record in MLB, 74–40, and were six games ahead of the Braves in the NL East.
The Padres Tony Gwynn was hitting .394 and trying to become the first player to finish over .400 since Ted Williams in 1941.
The Giants Matt Williams had 43 home runs. With 47 games remaining, Williams was on pace to match Roger Maris' single season record of 61 home runs.

E.E.

It's pretty amazing to look at the numbers Edwin Encarnacion is putting up for Toronto this season: .279 BA, 40 HR, 102 RBI, .380 OBP, .946 OPS.
He has walked 74 times this year. He walked 72 times combined in 2010-11.
He has 102 RBI this year. He had 106 RBI in 2010-11, in 307 MORE plate appearances.
He hit 17 HR last season in 60 fewer plate appearances.
He hit 38 HR last two seasons combined.
His 40 HR this year are 14 more than his previous career high (26 '08)
His 102 RBI are 26 more than his previous career high (76 '07).
His OBP is .046 higher than last year
His .566 slugging is .113 higher than last year and .084 higher than any other season.
Edwin Encarnacion's 40 HR's this year are 5 more than the guy he was traded for(Scott Rolen) has hit in 3.5 seasons with the Reds. (Listener Jeff)
He is 29-years old and recently signed a 5-year, $35M extension with Toronto.

From the Toronto Star today:
During a season where so much has gone so wrong for the Toronto Blue Jays, Encarnacion has risen Phoenix-like out of the debris.
His production this season has been the by-product of hard work and a more compact swing. “For me it’s a lot,” he said of hitting No. 40. “I knew (heading into the season) I can get 30, but not 40. That’s part of my work. In the off-season I’m going to continue to do the same, come back next year and try to hit 40 again.”

Pirates clueless about winning
Pittsburgh Tribune Review
Tell me how Clint Hurdle has overseen two collapses now.
I applaud the man for turning the Pirates around. Really, it took a special personality. But he’s the one who came up with the slogan FINISH for his team, and he, maybe more than anyone, must come to grips with why that line gets drawn in July.
Have you seen Hurdle lately?
Looks like a beaten man.
And don’t let the players off, by any means.

Bengals

If Bengals ever want to win, they must reconcile their past with their present
NationalFootballPost
I spent one season in Cincinnati in the 90’s. Many old school traditions were still in place—in honor of the past. We weighed in before practice, ran gassers after practice, and had to complete a battery of fitness tests before the season. There’s a strange thrill in preparing yourself for an NFL season and knowing you’ll be evaluated on how many pull ups you can do.

Wind Storm 2008
While the Cincinnati Bengals were losing at home to the Tennessee Titans, 24-7, the effects of Hurricane Ike hit the tri-state area.  Wind Storm 2008 caused quite a bit of damage that afternoon and knocked out power in many areas for hours and in some areas for several days.  Winds in excess of 70 miles per hour were reported in several areas.
