Reds
Observations
I know it's August, but last night felt like October playoffs
Reds down 1-0, up 3-1, tied 3-3, down 4-3, tied, win 5-4
Total team win...up and down the order
Homer was better, 0 BB and worked around 1st inning trouble.
Marty said Bryan Price found a mechanical glitch in his delivery.
Homer is totally different on road: 2.91 to 5.42.....BA .243 to .317
Per Mark Sheldon: Reds have won 9 straight road starts by Bailey.
No way I PH for Bailey 1-1 in 7th w/ runners 2nd/3rd 0 outs. Why? They were already short a reliever, they'd needed 3.2 IN from pen night before and the pen has been shaky at best.
Frazier reminds me of Sean Casey in how he talks and acts. There is a genuine appreciation for what he gets to do. Cool to see family there.
Would have never imagined Frazier's numbers.294-18-55...on pace for 24 HR/72 RBI
Zack huge SF in 7th for lead and 9th inning HR.....16 HR, 30 2B...on a tear lately.
Hanigan: threw out another runner, great tag at plate, could not get bunt down but got run in to tie 1-1.
Sure glad Rolen didn't retire at All-Star break.
Rolen since ASG: .357-.444-.571-1.016, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 14 BB, 15 K, 84 AB
Chapman 30 saves....22 row. How do they move to rotation in 2013?
Killer 6th inning...loaded with no outs and no runs
As for the cracks in foundation from yesterday's discussion:
Defense shaky with another error and unearned run
Bullpen shaky with Marshall allowing 2 inherited runners to score and Broxton allowing a run.
Silly that Broxton gets a win for allowing 2 H, BB, R in one inning and giving up lead.
Broxton: 7 games, 6 innings, 10 H, 2 BB, 2 blown saves, 7.50 ERA
It is amazing how many fans seem to wait for things to go wrong so they can jump on it.
25-11 without Votto. I'm thinking he's not back til Sept 1.
August ERA of bullpen
7.50 Broxton
6.75 Ondrusek
5.79 LeCure
3.68 Marshall
2.70 Arredondo
1.50 Simon
0.87 Chapman
From listener Jeff
If you look at Broxton's stats last 3 years(2010-12), he had a great 10 week period
at the start of this season, but other than that he's been very ineffective.
From 04/08/12 to 06/27/12: 1.26 ERA.
All other games last 3 seasons: 4.71 ERA.
Reds rally with Cozart's 9th inning HR
In honor of the win....after dropping 7 in a row to Phils, and 12 of last 13
Valdez welcome in Philly, Rolen is not
Nick Masset: 4 hits, 2 walks, 3 runs, 0 outs at Louisville
Mesoraco will serve 2-game suspension, Navarro up, Ondrusek down
From the Reds
Reds C Devin Mesoraco has settled his appeal and will serve a 2-game suspension tonight and tomorrow for his actions on 7/30 vs SD...on 8/1 Major League Baseball announced a 3-game suspension...the Reds will play tonight and tomorrow with 24 players...in other transactions today, the Reds recalled from Class AAA Louisville C Dioner Navarro (#30) and optioned to Louisville RHP Logan Ondrusek.

Cincinnati Reds versus St. Louis Cardinals/Crosley Field
"Reds Hit Five Homers, Three by Robinson, in 11-4 Win"
The Reds hit five home runs on the day, including three by first baseman Frank Robinson. A six-run sixth inning put the Reds in front, 10-2, and put the game out of reach on a hot summer day in Cincinnati. Robinson homered in the fifth inning, in the sixth inning, and in the eighth inning, going 3-for-5 with 6 RBI to lead the Reds offense. Shortstop Eddie Kasko and second baseman Johnny Temple also homered for the Reds. Rookie starter Jim O'Toole had a bunt single in the Reds six-run sixth inning, but likely due to the day's heat, was then lifted for a pinch-runner. O'Toole pitched 6.0 innings to pick up the win over Cardinals starter and losing pitcher Vinegar Bend Mizell. Orlando Peña pitched the final 3.0 innings for the Reds to close out the 11-4 win.

Barry's daughter

Cymber Larkin was at GABP Tuesday. Thanks Michael Anderson for the photos.
She will join me in-studio on ESPN 1530 today.

Barry Larkin's daughter, Cymber, creates own identity through music, lacrosse
Orlando Sentinel
The 16-year-old daughter of baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin is creating her own identity as an R&B/pop singer.
She is also one of Central Florida's top lacrosse players for Dr. Phillips, one of 57 area boys and girls teams starting their seasons this week.
"I've been playing with DP since fifth grade," Cymber said. "Coming in and actually being able to put on the real jersey and play on the field, I love it."
While Cymber excels in lacrosse and aspires to earn a college scholarship, all indications are her future is in music.

With no Wells, can Xavier find the magic?
ESPN
In a cruel twist of irony, Xavier just might miss the NCAA field for the first time since 2005 in the same year that its athletic director, Mike Bobinski, serves as selection committee chair.
What’s going to be interesting here is to see how X regroups. This is a program accustomed to winning and winning big fairly easily. Just how these players, who have done nothing yet but were recruited on the gravy train of success, responds will be telling.
Statement from Xavier University:
“The Xavier University Conduct Board (UCB), made up of faculty, students and administrators, found Xavier sophomore and basketball player Dezmine Wells responsible for a serious violation of the Code of Student Conduct. The punishment for the violation is expulsion from the University.
“While we understand there is heightened interest in this situation because it involves a student-athlete, we must reiterate that first and foremost Xavier’s interest and responsibility to all of our students is to provide a quality education in a safe and nurturing environment.
“A serious violation of Xavier’s Code of Student Conduct will not be tolerated. All Xavier students are subject to the same protections and consequences.
“Because of Federal privacy law restrictions, no additional comments may be made in order to protect the privacy of those involved, and to honor the integrity of the UCB process.”
Wells, a 6-5 guard/forward and member of the 2012 Atlantic 10 Conference All-Rookie Team, started 32 games as a freshman in the 2011-12 season. He finished fourth on the team in scoring (9.8 ppg.) and third in rebounding (4.9 rpg.).

Please help
A Clermont County Umpire could use your help. Don Schwab, who umpires in New Richmond and Batavia, lost everything in a house fire July 27th. He and his daughters escaped harm, but he now has to start over. The Clermont County Vietnam Veterans have arranged a Fund Raiser at Campbell’s Barn Restaurant, 1852 SR 125 in Amelia across from Walmart. A portion of the sales from this Wednesday August 22nd (4-9pm) will be donated to Don’s recovery needs. Please spread the word to your Knothole families.
