Montas knocked out early, Reds fall to Mariners

Quick Cap: Three batters into the game Frankie Montas and the Reds trailed 3-0 and it didn't get better. Montas walked four and allowed a three run homer in a 45 pitch 1st inning, then allowed a two run shot in the 3rd inning and failed to retire a batter in the inning.

Montas: 2 IN, 3 H, 5 R, 5 BB, 1 K, 2 HR, 66 pitches/34 strikes. He was all over the place. All. Over.
1st three batters faced: BB, BB, HR. 1st inning: 3 R, 4 BB, 45 pitches/23 strikes.  The 45 pitch inning was a career high.
He walked five (T-career high) after issuing just four free passes in his first three starts.
Velocity: 96.13 in his first start. Since then 94.39, 94.65 and last night 93.18.
His 45 pitches in the 1st inning were the most thrown against the Mariners in the opening frame since Jake Odorizzi in 2017.
He threw 36 pitches in the 3rd inning of his last start vs the Brewers.

Bullpen: 6.0 innings, gave up 7 hits, 4 runs with 1 walk and 5 strikeouts.
The saving grace was being able to cover the final six inning with just to relievers and not blowing up the bullpen.
Nick Martinez: 4 IN, 1 R, 56 pitches. He came for Montas w/o 0 outs and down 5-1 in the 3rd. He retired the side on 11 pitches. 
Buck Farmer: 2 IN, 3 R.

Sweet D: Elly made a heck of a running, sliding, back to the infield catch towards the left field line.

0 for 18: India, Steer, Elly, Martini, Stephenson

Woeful M's: Seattle entered the game 28th in runs, 27th in BA (.210) and 3rd in strikeouts. Their 9 runs was a season high, topping previous best of 6.

M's and L's: The Reds are 2-8 in Seattle and have dropped 17 of 22 vs the Mariners.
